Acts of the Sacred Heart by Kiki Kazimi
11 minutes | Filmed in Ireland & Italy |
Produced in the Netherlands | 2024
Concept
Acts of the Sacred Heart investigates the intersections of body, power, and institutional control, using personal and historical narratives to reflect on the influence of Catholic structures on individual autonomy. The work juxtaposes scenes filmed in Ireland, reflecting on oppressive social and religious frameworks, with footage from the Vatican, exploring the performative potential of the body as a site of resistance.
Through documentary-style footage, newspaper clippings, and first-person reflection, the film addresses themes of bodily autonomy, gender, sexuality, and social constraints, drawing attention to historical and contemporary injustices enforced by institutional authority. Shot on Sony Handycam, the piece embraces a chaotic, firsthand experience aesthetic, blending intimate moments with public space interventions to challenge normative structures and provoke critical reflection.
